Tuesday. Ella had been gone for 3 days and the boys were coming back. Nadia was beginning to feel better as she was becoming accustomed to living alone and was extremely excited to see Tim and Brian again. She took the morning off of work to greet them at the airport. She stood with all the other wives and girlfriends, a little uncomfortable since she didn’t know them terribly well. Soon the team walked off the escalator and she locked eyes with Tim in his adorable bow tie. She felt an uncontrollable smile come across her face. She hadn’t been this happy since he left. Then, she locked eyes with Brian, who had the strangest look on his face. She couldn’t tell if he was holding back a smile or holding back tears. She ran over to them to hug Tim, but was attacked with a huge hug from Brian.
“Nadie!!!” Brian lifted her off the ground.
Nadia felt her eyebrow crinkle as she looked over to Tim who had the same strange expression on his face.
“Lay off, man. She’s my girl,” Tim said, jokingly.
Brian put Nadia down and Tim took over. Nadia wrapped her legs around his waist, kissing him. She was so happy.
“You have no idea how much I missed you,” Tim said as he put her down.
Nadia smiled, blushing. She was about to give him another hug, when Brian took her arm and gently pulled her over to a secluded corner. She turned back to Tim shrugging her shoulders in confusion.
“Where’s Ella?”
“Santa Barbra, didn’t she tell you?”
“She actually went?”
“Yes, of course. Why wouldn’t she?”
Brian was silent, his face blank. “It’s just that…” his voice trailed off.
“Brian?”
“She didn’t really, did she?”
“Yes.” Nadia spoke firmly, trying to get him out of his funk.
“But the way we ended our last phone call was…bad. I don’t even know what we are. How could she just leave without talking to me?”
They sat on the floor of the airport in silence for a while, and then Brian lifted Nadia up by her hands and gave her another huge hug, using her as his support, nuzzling his head into her hair. She was surprised, yet felt a warmth come over her. She was reminded of all the days she and Brian spent together as kids and how much they relied on each other. She had missed being his support system and his best friend. She held him a little closer.
Nadia and Tim went back to Nadia’s house and Brian went back to his house.
Nadia and Tim sat on the couch with something on the television playing quietly in the background. She sat on his lap and sat face to face in silence, kissing gently.
“Do you really have to go to work after lunch?” Tim wrapped his hands around her waist.
“Unfortunately, yes. I have to be good to make up for our little incident.”
Tim smiled, seeming proud of himself. “Hey, can I show you something before you go back?”
“Does it involve lunch?” Nadia asked, batting her eyes.
“You’ll see.” He lifted her off his lap and brought her out to his car. They began driving and Nadia quickly realized where they were headed.
“You don’t have a game today!” Nadia said, confused.
“Secrets secrets!” Tim held her hand as they walked into the stadium. “A couple of the guys are coming to practice to make up for having the last couple of days off. But I have something better to show you!” He looked so excited, like a little kid.
They took a series of elevators lower and side to side.
“Are we emerging ourselves in a bomb shelter?” Nadia asked, grabbing Tim’s arm.
“Wait and see!”
The doors opened to show a beautiful, open room with a huge window straight out to the water at the end.
“This is so cool! Where are we?”
“It used to be a batting cage, but it has been turned into a secret hang out spot for some of the guys. Look you can see an otter!”
Nadia skipped around like a little girl in the open space, ending up at the window to look into the ocean. Tim crept up behind her and grabbed her waist. “Do you like it?”
She smiled, wrapping her arms around his. “I love it!”
He twisted her around by the waist, pulling her closer, kissing her passionately. Soon they heard a series of whistles and yells coming from the elevator. They turned back to see a few guys from the team smiling at them. Nadia and Tim looked at each other, turning red. Tim grabbed her hand, guiding her over to them. Although Nadia felt herself getting shy, she couldn’t help but feel good that Tim wasn’t ashamed of her and wanted to show her off. She shook hands with Affeldt, Cain, Bumgarner, and Zito. They all talked for a while before Nadia looked at the time and saw she was 20 minutes late for work.
“Oh my god! It’s 12:50!” She grabbed Tim’s arm.
“Shit! I’ll drive you.”
They said goodbye and ran out of the stadium, laughing at the ridiculousness of getting caught making out. They sped from Nadia’s house to get into work clothes to her office where they kissed goodbye.
“Wait, Nadia! What are you doing tonight?”
“Nothing. I really have to go!” Nadia began running in her heels and skirt.
“See you at 8:00.”
Nadia turned around and smiled, then continued running again.

That night at around 10:30, Nadia got a phone call from Tim. Ella was in her room, as she had been keeping to herself since the news of her mother.
“Hello?” Nadia asked, quietly.
“Nadia! Nadia, I just got your message. What is going on? Ella is moving? Are you okay? You sounded like you were crying. And this road trip is the worst, babe. I miss you so fucking much. And we have been having intense pitching workshops in an attempt to get us out of this downward spiral. All I want to do all day is talk to you. And I feel horrible that I haven’t been there to talk you through this stuff. I want to hug you.” He was out of breath at the end of his rant.
Nadia smiled, relieved that he had been busy. “You have no idea how happy I am to hear your voice. Ella is in such a bad place. I have no one to talk to. Oh, and I want to hug you too!”
“Why is Ella moving out?”
Will Ella be okay with me telling him? Has she told Brian? “Umm…can you hold on for one second?” She dropped the phone and scampered into Ella’s room. “Elle…Tim is on the phone. Can I tell him what’s…up?”
Ella nodded adding, “Ask him not to tell Brian. I want to.”
Nadia nodded and ran back to her phone. “Well…”
She explained the whole story start to finish, ending by saying, “I want what is best for her, but selfishly, I really want—need—her in my life. She is the main reason why I am not locked up in the pantry with a bad case of social anxiety every day.”
“Nadia,” Tim interrupted, “I can be that person for you. I want to help you with your problems and be there for you. Always. Because God knows I can’t handle not being there for you.”
Nadia smiled. “I can’t thank you enough for not running away. I have given you more than enough reason.”
“False. You have been nothing but perfect.”
Nadia giggled. He is perfect.
“So, when does she leave?”
“Tomorrow.” Saying it out loud made it so much more real for her. Her chin quivered.
“What? That is so soon. Does Brian know about this?”
“I don’t think so.”
“He is going to flip.”
“You can’t tell him! Ella wants to tell him on her own time.”
“Gotcha.” There was a noise coming from the background of Tim’s phone. “Damn, babe. I have to go. Ugh. I really miss you a lot. I’ll wink at you when I pitch tomorrow!”
“Oh, no. That’s not necessary. I’ve seen you wink. Don’t make a fool of yourself on TV.” She laughed.
“How dare you! I will practice my winking just for you. I really have to go, but I’ll call you tomorrow. Bye!”
Nadia walked into Ella’s room, where Ella was watching a movie on her computer.
“E, can we talk?”
“Of course.”
“How have you not broken the news to Brian yet? Haven’t you been talking?”
“Yeah, I’m just kind of hiding everything until I am ready to talk to him.”
“You have to tell him soon. Don’t you think he will freak out if he comes home and sees you are mysteriously in Santa Barbara?”
“I don’t know. I just don’t want to cause a fuss. Or lay anything on him that’s so heavy that he runs.”
“Ella, this isn’t some little thing. It’s not causing a fuss. And I’m sure he would want to help. He’s a good guy.”
Ella teared up. “I don’t know what to say. It seems wrong to not say it in person…but what other option do I have, I guess.”
Nadia stood up and began to walk out the door, before turning back and saying, “Good luck, kid. Love you.” Nadia closed the door as Ella began to cry more.
Ella picked up her phone and dialed Brian’s number.
“Ella?”
“Hey, Bri.”
“Well, you don’t sound very chipper, now do you?”
“Yeah…yeah I’m not really chipper at all.”
Ella sensed Brian’s tone change from joking to serious.
“What’s up? Wait hold on, let me go somewhere quiet…okay, what’s wrong?”
Ella took a deep breath in. “Okay, this is kind of a lot so bear with me.” Before she could say anything else, she broke down in tears, gasping for air.
“Ella, what is going on?!”
“I’m sorry I think I need a minute.” Ella hung up the phone. Brian, left speechless on the other line, immediately called her back.
“Brian, I am not fucking around right now, I need a minute,” Ella answered dryly, hanging up again. She had a tendency to become ruthless when she couldn’t handle her emotions.
Nadia heard the ruckus and slowly walked into Ella’s room, knowing she was taking a risk. “Elle? Is everything ok? I heard screaming.” Ella was silent. Nadia obviously had her own problems, being unable to speak in certain social situations and feeling extremely insecure, but Ella had her problems too. She could help any friend with any situation, but when it came to herself, she was lost. She cut herself off from the world and became extremely cold. Nadia had become accustomed to this and didn’t blame Ella. We all have our shit. Nadia got the picture and walked out of the room. Her feelings weren’t hurt; she understood.
Ella took a breath in, beginning to feel horrible about what she had just said to Brian and how she had been treating Nadia lately. She dialed Brian’s number.
“Ella. What is going on?”
She took a deep breath in. I have to tell him. “My mom passed away. And I’m going to Santa Barbara for a while to be with my family.”
“I’m so sorry, baby. If you want to talk, I am here. I’ve been through this. Are you dealing okay?”
“I’m fine, Brian, really. You don’t need to treat me like I am a baby,” she paused. “God, I am so sorry. I’m snapping at everyone,” she took a breath in. “I am so not fine,” she let out. “I don’t deal with this kind of thing. I keep to myself and push everyone away, but I don’t want to do that.” She put her hand up to her head, “I don’t want to push you away.” She laughed, “I’m such a girl; I hate it.”
“I don’t hate it. If you weren’t a girl, I would really have to reevaluate my life right now. But in all seriousness, I am totally up for being your therapist or support system or sexy boyfriend or whatever you need me to be when I get back in only like 4 more days.”
Ella wrinkled her eyebrows, “No, Brian. I’m not going to be here in 4 days. I’m going home. For a while.”
“What is a while?”
“Like months. Plural.”
Brian swallowed, staying silent.
“Jesus, why is everyone having that reaction?” Ella felt herself getting hot. “It’s my decision. My fucking mom died, Brian, I can do whatever I want.”
“I totally agree. Do what you need to do.”
Ella felt guilt creep upon her again. Right as she was about to apologize, Brian spoke.
“I should go. Bye, Ella.” He hung up.
Ella closed her eyes, hitting her hand against her head.
The next morning at 4:30, Nadia heard a knock on her door.
“I’m out her here, N.” Ella had a solemn look on her face.
Nadia rubbed her eyes and groaned, not conscious enough to grasp what was happening.
“Nadia, I really have to go. Say goodbye to me!” Ella laughed, but her eyes looked tired and sad.
Nadia got up and gave Nadia a huge hug. “I will come visit you soon. Unless I die without you. Blech, this sucks.”
“I know. I’m sorry. I should go.” Ella spoke in short sentences, trying not to get emotional. She gave Nadia one last hug and walked out the door. Nadia crawled back into bed and tried to fall back asleep.
